5 Rules to Survive and Keep Your FTMO Account

5 Rules to Survive and Keep Your FTMO Account

Passing the Challenge gets all the attention. The screenshots, the announcements, the “I made it” posts. What gets talked about far less is what happens next, and that is usually where things go wrong.

An FTMO Account does not fail because a trader forgot how to trade. It fails because something quietly changed once the pressure of the Challenge was gone. Here are five rules that keep that from happening.

1. Check Your Trading Objectives and Rules Before You Start

Before you place a single trade on your FTMO Account, it is worth going back through your Trading Objectives and Rules in full. Your Max Drawdown, your daily loss limit – all of it.

It sounds obvious, but it is the step most traders skip once they are on FTMO Account. A quick check now is what stands between you and a breach you never saw coming.

2. Trade Smaller Once You Are an FTMO Trader

Bigger account, bigger size, right? Not if you want to stay on it.

Reducing your position size once you move to an FTMO Account keeps your chance of staying on it much higher. It also gives you room to make a mistake here and there without it turning into a breach.

3. Keep the Same Daily Routine You Had During the Challenge

Getting on FTMO Account brings its own kind of pressure, and some traders respond to it by quietly changing their routine. Skipping the pre-market check, trading outside their usual hours, dropping the end-of-day review because everything “feels fine.” None of that happens on purpose. It happens under stress, and it is often what breaks a process that was working well.

A few things help keep it from happening:

  • Run the same pre-market checklist you used during Evaluation, even when it feels unnecessary.
  • Stick to your usual session hours, do not chase extra opportunities just because the account is new.
  • Keep the end-of-day review going, especially on the days that went well.
  • Treat your first weeks on an FTMO Account account exactly like the Challenge itself, not a reward for finishing it.

4. Do Not Add New Rules to Your Strategy Mid-Streak

A good run does strange things to judgement. A few winning weeks in, and suddenly there is a new indicator, a new session to trade, a new “tweak” that felt obvious in the moment.

If it worked, that streak happened with the rules you already had. Adding to them mid-run does not usually improve the edge, it just adds a variable you have not tested. Save the changes for when you can actually evaluate them, not while you are riding a result.

5. Take Your Rewards Regularly

Leaving everything on the FTMO Account feels like progress. It is not. One bad month can wipe out gains you never actually took, and it will not feel like a paper loss when it happens.

Set a reward rhythm and stick to it, whatever the balance looks like that week. Money on the account is not the same as money in your pocket, and treating it as untouchable “for later” is how good months quietly disappear.

Passing Proves Skill. Staying Proves Discipline.

The Challenge tests whether you can trade well under pressure. Keeping the account tests whether you can trade well without it. That second test rarely gets talked about, but it is the one that actually decides how long you last as an FTMO Trader.

None of these five rules are complicated. They are just easy to forget once the hardest part feels like it is behind you.
